It was a cool October day when Vivian arrived at her ‘forever’ home. Being a rescue dog who had never met me; I wondered what would happen if we didn’t get along. That thought quickly escaped my mind when she stepped out of the truck, walked through the front door and found herself a comfy spot on my sofa.
In a short span of time, I learned a lot about Viv and we became best buds. She loved our long walks, playing at doggy daycare, going for car rides, basking in the sun, and chewing on bones. She was scared of thunderstorms, loud noises, shadows and water. She wasn’t one to bark, loved children and wagged her tail constantly. She was a happy girl! When I got married and moved in with my husband, she developed a new love: Doritos and smoked ribs.
I often times wonder, who rescued who? Vivian became our family. We gave her nine years of companionship, trust, safety, comfort and unconditional love. In return, she gave us friendship, many laughs, a few home repair projects and nothing but constant loyalty. She brought more joy than we thought possible, and she will always hold a special place in our hearts.
After a very short, unexpected illness, we had to say good bye to our sweet girl. As Winnie the Pooh said “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” It’s as if time stood still that cold Saturday in November while we held Viv as she peacefully slipped away.
Vivian was a big part of our lives as well as our family and friend’s lives, so we decided to celebrate the wonderful life she lived with us. We had a Memorial Celebration at our home on a Saturday in December. We bought a digital picture frame that scrolled over 100 photos, displayed many framed pictures, statutes and trinkets we received from family and friends, made bookmarks and even served her favorite food: Doritos and smoked ribs. There were many tears shed that day, but overall there was much more laughter.
We often hear of the Rainbow Bridge, a place where our loved furry friends go and wait for us. We know she made it safely; she sent us a sign. Until we meet again sweet Viv!
